20 March 2012, in the Presidential Library was held a presentation of the “Color and Time” project timed to the exhibition of photographs by S. M. Prokudin-Gorsky and a workshop held by the leading photo correspondents of St. Petersburg. The attendees of the event were informed about the upcoming launch of the “Foreign View” annual photo contest.
The event has welcomed representatives of the Diplomatic Corps of St. Petersburg, photo correspondents, representatives of foreign cultural centers and foreign students. The guests visited the multimedia exhibition featuring the most comprehensive collection of works by a pioneer of Russian color photography S. M. Prokudin-Gorsky.
Opening the presentation, K. N. Knyaginin, Director General Deputy for scientific work, explained that after the October revolution and the civil war the collection of photographs by Prokudin-Gorsky, as many Russian archival documents and cultural values, found itself abroad. There the survived part of the collection was purchased by the Library of Congress. In 2010, as a part of the co-operation agreement, the Library of Congress turned digital copies of photographs by Prokudin-Gorsky over to the Presidential Library.
The attendees of the event have been demonstrated a trailer to the “Inventory of the Motherland… In the tracks of photographer Prokudin-Gorsky” by Dutch director Ben van Liskhaut. The plot of the film was inspired by the idea of the master to portray Russia. The director tried to show the impression of the Russian photographer from the Russian Empire during its last years of existence, and compared historical photos with current views of the places photographed by Prokudin-Gorsky.
